Tsunami in Kesennuma, Japan – Youtube Video

For me, this is one of the best clips out there with regards to the nature of the destruction of tsunamis. Shot by Mr. Kenichi Kurakami, and posted by Youtube user clancy688, this unbelievable, first-hand footage gives the viewer an intense sense and understanding of the way tsunamis can approach low-lying coastal margins, and how coastal defences do not always work as intended.

Revision Technique Idea/Grade 12 Farewell

I saw one of my 12 HL students revising and her technique caught my eye. For the different options we studied in class (Geophysical Hazards, Oceans and Coastal Margins, and Urban Environments), she printed out a blank world map and labelled the areas that were either case studies or examples used in class. This is a great way for more visual learners to map out and recall the material learned in class. It is also beneficial for me as well to analyse spatially the places I teach in class; I need to teach more about Africa! She gave me permission to post the photo.

I want to take a moment to wish all of my Grade 12 students success on their now-completed exams. It was a lot of fun teaching you and I hope we keep in touch!

Haiti Earthquake Case Study Flipped Classroom Assignment – Alberts absent, 13/11/18

Dear 11 HL,

What lies below is your work to be done in class on November 13th in my (planned) absence.  Do not do it beforehand.  Go through the videos and add the relevant notes to your case study which you have already started.  Please pause the video as it goes along to make sure everyone gets the proper notes down.  I fully expect this to be finished by the following class, so if you do not finish in class, please finish for homework.

The PDF of the lesson can be found here:

The first video is below.  For whatever reason, the other two are too large to upload on this site, so I will send them to you separately (I will send all three via google drive just in case):

Padlet Revision Activity – Urban Environments and Global Interactions Revision Questions

Last year, my grade 12s really enjoyed this activity for their revision and it ended up being quite straight forward to run.  If you don’t have one, make an account at www.padlet.com.  As a teacher, on a Smartboard, projector, Prowise; whatever you use, you can copy and paste one of the questions into a padlet.  Share the link to your padlet with your students, who can then via any device access it and respond to the question.  I did it in groups, so in teams of 3 students could come up with their answer.  Then, as a class, when all groups had answered, we looked at the responses on the big screen to analyse who did the best and compare/contrast responses.

Hazards and Disasters Revision Questions: Hazards and Disasters Questions

Urban Environments Revision Questions: Urban Environments Questions

Global Interactions Revision Questions: Global Interactions Questions

Mind you, these questions were based on the old syllabus, but there are still many relevant and useful questions that have ties to the new syllabus.   Also, some questions are quite specific to what I taught in class, so be aware that they will be of no used to you.
